Great North Swim – Supporting SPIN

PhillipTaber
I am Corporal Phillip Taber from 21 Engineer Regiment. I was seriously injured on the 11th of August 2010, whilst serving in Afghanistan. I was medically evacuated to Camp Bastion where I was stabilized and then flown to the Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham. Due to the skill of the team at Birmingham, I managed to keep both my legs, but not without a substantial loss of mobility. Over the past three years I have been undergoing intense rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court and undergone further operations, from which I have recovered well.

Last year I climbed Mount Snowdon in aid of the service charities that have given invaluable support throughout my on-going recovery. Whilst undergoing rehabilitation swimming has become my main form of exercise and I have set myself the challenge of swimming a mile in the Great North Swim, taking place on the 16th of June at Lake Windermere.

This year any money raised will be donated to SPIN. I have been inspired by the great service this charity provides. They run a social evening for people with special needs, which include activities such as sports, crafts, drama and life skills.

Although a mile might not sound much it actually equates to 64 lengths of a 25 metre swimming pool, this will be a considerable task for me, as I have sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and will only be using my arms when in the water.

I would like to invite you to kindly show your support if you feel able, you can donate to SPIN by visiting the how to donate page on this website. There are also contacts on there that will be able to help with this.

If you have any queries for me please email me at: mrphillt@hotmail.co.uk or phone 07977441849.

Thank you for your help and support.

Corporal Phillip Taber and family.

Sponsored Swim

Sponsored Swim
Last night (30th January 2013) we were presented with a cheque for £926 which was the result of a Sponsored Swim undertaken by one of our members Brett Jennings, and his friend William Simpson.

Halloween Party

Halloween Fundraiser
On the last club night of the Autumn term SPIN held a Halloween Party for some 70 members and staff. The evening included activities, games and a fancy dress parade. Music was provided by two of the SPIN members.

Father Michael White from St John’s Catholic Church also attended and was one of the judges for the fancy dress parade, and also gave members an opportunity to hold and be photographed with the Olympic Torch which he carried along the route into Tamworth when the torch came to the town.

In the picture are Malcolm Vernon (leader) members Emily, Natalie and Matthew and leaders Gosia Kalisz and Fiona Sherriff.

Activities week a success…

The SPIN Activities Week (Monday 20th to Friday 24th August) was a great success. Held at Tamworth Youth Centre, around 30 members accessed the week and took part in various craft and sewing activities, sports, food hygiene and cooking for one, money management, gardening in a pot, internet safety, personal hygiene (hair, skin, nail and foot care), simple first aid, relationship training, money management, line dancing and a talk on benefits and work opportunities available for those with special needs from Chris Mortimer from Tamworth Jobcentre Plus.

SPIN was pleased to have a visit from Mayor Tina Clements on Tuesday. She had a go at some of the sports being played and had her photo taken with some of the members. SPIN is one of the Mayor’s charities.

Mid-week SPIN members were joined by a group of teenagers from Tamworth Youth Centre who hosted the day for them, running the ‘SPIN Olympics’ in the form of a ‘Spinathlon’ – a five-sport event for anyone who wanted to take part. The group also gave out healthy eating advice and cooked a healthy lunch. At the end of the day that went really well the group presented certificates and medals to those SPIN members who had taken part.

Volunteering to run the day was used as part of an award being done by the Tamworth Youth Centre young people, and SPIN was pleased to help them run activities that could be used as evidence towards achieving their award.

The two groups integrated so well that on the final day the teenagers joined the SPIN group again for lunch and an afternoon disco.

ASDA foundation presents cheque for £200

Cheque from ASDA
When SPIN was nominated as a charity, ASDA in Tamworth was asked to support and they very kindly agreed.

Collection boxes were put out in the store for SPIN and the other charities and customers could ask for a token at the end of their shopping to put into the charity box of their choice. The SPIN box actually had to be emptied once because it gained so many tokens!

At the end of the specified quarter SPIN was one of the charities that got the most tokens, so we were given £200, which was the share of the amount given out by ASDA each quarter.

A big thanks to ADSA and all those shoppers who chose us for their token!
