MEMBERS DESIGN T-SHIRT FOR MARATHON RUNNER RAISING MONEY FOR SPIN

Marathon runner Stephen Thompson with winning T-Shirt design
Local charity SPIN has a runner in this year’s London Marathon raising money for the club. Stephen Thompson, son of the charity’s secretary, will be running to raise money on 24 April.

Club members were invited to take part in a competition to create a design for the back and front of the T-shirt to be worn in the race. The 2 winners were Paul Randay, whose design will appear on the front of the T-shirt, and Kerri Wyatt, whose design will appear on the back.

For anyone who would like to help by donating money to SPIN, a ‘Virgin Money Giving’ page has been set up to receive sponsor donations for the Marathon. The website address is as follows:

An additional site has been created which will accept donations at all other times throughout the year. This is:

NVQ SUCCESS AT SPIN

For 16 months, six young people who are members of SPIN (Special People in Need), have sacrificed leisure activities at the club in favour of working hard towards an NVQ qualification.

In January all of them gained an NVQ award in Life and Living Skills from the OCR examination board. Presentation of certificates was made at the club in front of parents and friends just before the February half term.

Pictured with 2 of the tutors at either end, they are from left to right Natalie Barber (who passed in Arts and Crafts); Charlotte Mawdesley, Brett Jennings and Ashleigh Bradford (who passed in Personal Skills); Amy Baker (who gained 2 awards in both Arts and Crafts and Personal Skills), and finally Andrew Forest (who passed in Personal Skills).

Unfortunately, Andrew was unable to be present on the day of the presentation which is the reason he has been photographed separately at a later date.

SPIN Christmas Performance

Christmas Performance

Wednesday, 2 December was the SPIN Christmas Performance, held at Tamworth Youth Centre, which is now run by the One Recovery Team.

Publicised as a ‘Christmas Extravaganza’, more than a dozen SPIN members took part in front of a large audience of family, friends, other members, staff and volunteers. Christmas songs and carols, poems, readings, jokes and sketches were ably performed, and afterwards tea, coffee, mince pies and cakes were available for consumption before making the journey home.

SPIN CHRISTMAS PARTY

Christmas Dancing

The SPIN Christmas Party was held at the Sacred Heart Centre on Friday, 4 December, 2015. Around 90 members, their families, staff and volunteers came along, and danced the night away to a disco hosted by Brian Mawdsley, and tucked into a sumptuous buffet made by Roasters in Tamworth.

Many tickets were bought and prizes won at the Tombola, and the whole evening was most enjoyable and a great success.

SPIN Activity Week – Sponsored by Big Lottery Fund

Big Lottery
Between 11 and 15 August SPIN held a Life Skills Activity Week at Tamworth Youth Centre, which was kindly sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund. We are most grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for giving us cash to enable us to hold this event once again.

Numbers ranged between 35 and 45, and those who attended could choose to participate in activities such as many different types of craft, sports, keep fit, Zumba, rocket building, making and decorating cakes, first aid, safety, manicures and pedicures, a music quiz, treasure hunt, disco and karaoke.

Some of those who attended used certain activities to generate initial evidence in NVQ units in Life and Living Skills, which SPIN is running in conjunction with the Business Development Service, and which began during this week.

On Thursday, 14 August we had a visit from a Christian singing group from Ghana, who were visiting the area and wanted to call in to see what SPIN was doing. They sang and played instruments for us for about an hour before recommencing their tour.
